Terms of use
Last updated 22 October 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Cantoza (“we”) for the Cantoza program, its add-ons and this website. By installing or using Cantoza you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not install or use it.
What Cantoza is
Cantoza is a piano program for Windows. It plays MIDI songs with a piano sound on your computer, shows the notes on a keyboard, helps you practice and learn, lets you edit and humanize songs, records the picture as a video, and can send the notes as key presses to another program you choose. It runs on your computer: there is no account and your songs stay with you.
The license
Cantoza is licensed, not sold. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use it on the computers you own or control, for your own music making, practice and entertainment, including recordings and videos you publish (subject to the section on songs and files). You may not copy it except for backup, resell, rent, sublicense or redistribute it, or make it available as a service. You may not take it apart, decompile or reverse engineer it, or remove its notices, except where the law says you may regardless of this term. We keep all rights that these terms do not give you.
Free and Pro
There is always a free version, and it stays free. Features that are in the free version will not be moved to Pro. Pro is an optional one-time purchase: a lifetime license that unlocks the Pro features with a license key. The Free and Pro page and the program itself show which features are Pro.
- What “lifetime” means. A Pro license has no expiry date and no subscription: you pay once and it stays valid without a time limit. It belongs to the person who got the key, is for that person’s own use, and may not be shared or resold. “Lifetime” means the life of the product, not of the buyer, and is not a promise that we will develop Cantoza for ever.
- Checking the key. Cantoza checks the key with our license service when it starts and about once a day. A saved answer keeps Pro working for up to 30 days offline. A key that was refunded, revoked or found to be shared or used abusively can stop working.
- If Pro stops. If a Pro license ends, what you made keeps working and nothing is deleted; Pro features simply stop being applied, and your choices are kept in case you come back.
- The beta. Taking part in the beta is free and includes a Pro license key for the person who received the invitation.
- Buying. When Pro is on sale, an external payment provider will be the seller and its checkout terms, price, taxes and payment methods apply to the purchase. Refunds are handled through that provider under its terms and the law; your statutory rights as a consumer, for example a right to withdraw or to a remedy for a faulty product, are not limited by these terms.
Beta versions
Some versions of Cantoza are beta versions: they are tested with real people before the launch and can contain mistakes. A beta version can be set to stop working: on a date built into it, or when we publish a signed notice that versions below a certain number have ended. The program then shows one window with a link to the current version and closes; it does not fall back to the free version. Everything you made stays on your computer and works in the current version. We will say in the program or on this website why a beta ended and what to install instead. Because the end is announced through the internet, a computer that has never been online with a beta version is not stopped until it is.
Songs, files and recordings
You use Cantoza with your own MIDI files and with whatever you choose to add. You are responsible for having the right to use them and to record, share or publish what you make with them, including the music itself and any performance in it. Cantoza does not come with permission to use anyone else’s songs, and you must not use it to infringe anyone’s copyright. Songs and sounds that come with Cantoza are covered by the notices in its license file. Recordings made by the free version carry a small “Made with Cantoza” mark; you own what you record.
Add-ons
Some features are optional add-ons that download components from other publishers when you choose to install them (for example the audio-to-MIDI converter). Those components have their own licenses, shown before you install. If you give the converter a web link, it downloads the audio of that link to your computer: do that only for content you have the right to use and in line with that website’s own terms. Converting audio into MIDI does not give you any rights in the music.
Other programs and games
Cantoza can send key presses to other programs, so a song can be played in a game, a website or another app you choose. Many games and services forbid automation in their own terms, and they may act against your account, for example by a ban. You use that feature at your own risk and you are responsible for following the rules of every program, game or service you use it with. Cantoza is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them, and we are not responsible for what they do.
Acceptable use
Do not share your Pro key or use a key you were not given; do not try to get around license checks, the update check or the end of a beta; do not overload, probe or attack our license, update, feedback or website services; do not use Cantoza to break the law or other people’s rights. We can stop a license or a report that abuses these services.
Open-source and third-party components
Cantoza contains software and sounds from others, under their own licenses. They are listed in the program under Settings, Help and about, Open-source licenses, and in the license file in the installation folder. Those licenses apply to those parts.
Updates
Cantoza checks for updates when it starts and updates itself only when you accept an update; every update is verified with our signature before it runs. We may change, add or remove features, but we will not move a free feature to Pro. We may stop supporting an old version.
No warranty and limits of liability
Cantoza is provided “as is”, as far as the law allows, without a promise that it is free of mistakes or fits a particular purpose, and the beta versions even more so. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost data, or actions taken by third-party programs or services against you, and our total liability for anything arising from the program is limited to what you paid for it (nothing, for the free version and the beta). Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, for example for intent or gross negligence, or the rights you have as a consumer where you live.
Ending the agreement
You can stop at any time by uninstalling Cantoza. We may end your license if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, after telling you why. Sections that by their nature continue (for example the ones on ownership, liability and the law) continue after the end.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when Pro goes on sale or a feature is added. The date above shows the latest version, and for an important change we tell you in the program or on this website before it applies to you. If you do not agree with a change, stop using Cantoza; a change does not take away a Pro license you already have.
The law
If you are a consumer, the mandatory consumer-protection rules of the country where you live apply in addition to these terms. If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest stays in force.
